A school inaugurated in the year of independence, a year of great significance to the people.
Mota Ulun Elementary School (2002)
East Timor gained independence in 2002. Many schools were in very poor condition following years of conflict. The school had only three classrooms for 500 students. In two months, the community renovated these classrooms and built three more. A 50-meter protective stone wall was erected to shield the school and the latrines from the river below.
Total cost: 9,500 CHF
Ten years later…
Repeated flooding has significantly damaged the school. The authorities must find a suitable plot of land, further away from the river, to rebuild the school.
Latest news from summer 2015…
We have learned from our local contact that the Mota Ulun school has been so successful that the government has finally decided to renovate the building and expand it. The authorities would not have done so if MOST association had not invested in a renovation project in 2002, which allowed the school to remain operational all these years.
