Children in remote villages have a right to an education too…
Banaka Elementary School (1997)
The village of Banaka, home to about fifty families, is located deep in the Mosquitia jungle. It takes six hours by canoe to reach it. The teacher instructs the 43 students in a hut. The school, built of wood on stilts with a zinc roof—since it rains 10 months out of 12—was inaugurated in November 1997.
Total cost: 6,500 CHF
Puerto Lempira Secondary School (1997)
Puerto Lempira is the capital of the Mosquitia region. The region’s only school has 500 students. The school has new sewing, cooking, and carpentry workshops but lacks equipment. Two sewing machines, a gas stove, and kitchen utensils were provided to support vocational training. This donation took place in May 1997.
Total cost: 800 CHF
